Price Genealogy : Global Batch Numbers for the “International Genealogical Index”

The “International Genealogical Index” (IGI), produced by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), is without doubt the most comprehensive resource for genealogists worldwide. In order to reap the greatest benefits from this compilation, researchers must understand how this database was created. Understanding the term batch number and learning how to identify these numbers greatly enhances searching capabilities on the IGI and enables researchers to retrieve entire transcripts of parish registers online for free. Genealogists around the globe have created guides to help researchers identify IGI Batch Numbers.

What is the “International Genealogical Index?”

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) trace their ancestors because they believe that their families can be together forever, even beyond the grave. The pedigrees they create become part of the “International Genealogical Index.”

Price Genealogy : Localize Your Surname with Distribution Maps

Genealogists and various organizations in Europe and North America have produced maps that make learning about your surnames fun!

Surname-distribution maps are great aids to determining immigrant origins. They work particularly well for studies of less-common surnames and in countries that did not use patronymics. United States researchers should remember to search for variant surname spellings, especially for those with European ancestors whose surnames were Anglicized in America. If immigrants arrived in family units, identifying places where both the father and mother’s surnames were prevalent, provides valuable clues about their origins.

The following searches are free:

Price Genealogy : Oft-Overlooked Source in LDS Research

Leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have instructed members of the LDS Church to trace their family histories for nearly 175 years, ever since the Prophet Joseph Smith received revelations from the Lord about the eternal nature of families. Thousands of pedigrees were generated by nineteenth-century LDS pioneers in order to complete temple ordinances in obedience to these commandments. For living members of the LDS Church who wish to keep the ball rolling and continue tracing their pioneer ancestors’ lineages back in time, it is important that this material is consulted prior to beginning research anew. In many families, such as those of Welsh descent, they offer clues that cannot be replicated through traditional genealogical research, and in all families, they will help current researchers get off on the right foot. Unfortunately, because this information is not easily accessible, many people today overlook this invaluable resource.
